Black and Smokeless Powders: Technologies for Finding Bombs and the Bomb Makers by National Research Council, Some 600 pipe bomb explosions per year have occurred in the United States during the past several years. How can we help protect the public from these homemade devices? This book, a response to a Congressional mandate, focuses on ways to improve public safety by preventing bombings involving smokeless or black powders and apprehending the makers of the explosive devices. It examines technologies used for detection of explosive devices before they explode -- including the possible addition of marking agents to the powders -- and technologies used in criminal investigations for identification of these powders -- including the possible addition of taggants to the powders -- in the context of current technical capabilities. The book offers general conclusions and recommendations about the detection of devices containing smokeless and black powders and the feasibility of identifying makers of the devices from recovered powder or residue. It also makes specific recommendations about marking and tagging technologies. This volume follows the work reported in Containing the Threat from Illegal Bombings (NRC 1998), which studied similar issues for bombings that utilize high explosives.
Modern Muzzleloading for Today's Whitetails by Ian McMurchy, This in-depth book concentrates on hunting deer with in-line rifles--the black-powder guns that are revolutionizing muzzleloader deer hunting in the same way the compound bow propelled bow-hunting into a pastime for the masses. 100 color photos.
Process of corning black powder - Corning is the process by which meal powder, or finely divided black powder, is compressed into cakes, crushed, and then screened by particle size into different size categories. This process alters the burn rate of black powder, giving it more flexibility for different applications. Black powder - Black powder is a type of gunpowder invented in the 9th century and was practically the only known propellant and explosive until the middle of the 19th century. It has been superseded by more efficient explosives such as smokeless powders and TNT. Kammerlader - The Kammerlader, or chamber loader, was the first Norwegian breech loading rifle, and among the very first breech loaders adopted for use by an armed force anywhere in the world. A single shot black powder rifle, the kammerlader was operated with a crank mounted on the side of the receiver. Smokeless powder - Smokeless powder is the name given to a number of gunpowder-like propellants used in firearms which produce negligible smoke when fired, unlike the older black powder which it replaced. Types of smokeless powder include cordite, ballistite and, historically, Poudre B.
